Rain and air temperature: 30-year averages for Valença (Bahia), the mainland town facing Boipeba (Climatempo); Climate-Data.org gives very similar values (≈1,434 mm/year, peak in June). Sea temperature: Morro de São Paulo averages (TemperaturaDoMar.pt). "Crowds" is this guide's qualitative assessment based on Brazilian holidays, not official statistics.

Weather: when it rains and when it shines

Boipeba has a humid tropical climate: it rains in every month, just in different amounts. In Valença's averages, April–July concentrates the rain (150–169 mm/month), while September to March generally sits between 86 and 113 mm. December is the driest month. Highs are around 29 °C in summer (Dec–Mar) and 25 °C in winter (Jun–Aug) — it never really gets cold.

Sea temperature

The water is warm all year. In neighbouring Morro de São Paulo the average ranges from about 25.5 °C in August to 28.7 °C in March. For snorkelling, calm seas and clear water matter more than temperature — and those depend mostly on wind, rain and tide.

High season, crowds and prices

New Year (Réveillon) and January

The peak of the year. Rooms and boats sell out first; book early and expect higher prices and minimum stays.

Carnival

Falls in February or March depending on the year. Very busy across the whole Cairu area.

July holidays

Brazilian school holidays create a second peak, despite the rain.

Low season

April–June and August–November (outside holidays) usually mean more availability and more room to negotiate.

Price effects are described qualitatively: there are no public month-by-month price statistics for Boipeba.

How the tides affect the pools and boat trips

The natural pools at Moreré, Bainema and Castelhanos, and the small pools at Boca da Barra and Tassimirim, only form when low tide exposes the reefs. At high tide the reef is underwater and there's no "pool". That's why skippers plan the round-the-island trip to reach the pools near low water, and why the walk from the village to Moreré requires fording the Oriti river at low tide.

How to read a tide table (tábua de marés)

  1. Pick the station. The Brazilian Navy's Hydrographic Centre (CHM/DHN) has no station on Boipeba. The nearest official ones are Porto de Salvador (north) and Porto de Ilhéus – Malhado (south). Use the CHM tide tables or the Navy's TábuaMares tool.
  2. Read the day's lines. There are usually two high tides (preamar) and two low tides (baixa-mar) a day, each with a time and a height in metres. Real example (Capitania dos Portos de Salvador, 11 Oct 2026, Brazilian Navy/CHM forecast): low tide at 10:04, 0.11 m.
  3. Look for a daylight low tide around 0.0–0.2 m. Negative heights (below zero) are even better.
  4. Check locally. Times and heights at Boipeba differ from the reference port; use the table to choose the day and confirm the time with your boatman.
Official tables use Brasília time. Always double-check the date and station.

Spring and neap tides (moon phases)

Spring tides — full and new moon

Sun, Earth and Moon line up, so the range between high and low tide is at its biggest. Low tide drops lowest — the best time for the pools. ("Spring" has nothing to do with the season.)

Neap tides — first and last quarter

Sun and Moon at right angles: a smaller range. Low tide doesn't drop as far, so pools are deeper or don't form.

The cycle repeats about twice a month, so almost any week-long trip includes a few good-tide days.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit Boipeba?

No month is rain-free — it's a humid tropical climate. Based on 30-year averages for nearby Valença (Climatempo), September to March is the drier period and April to July the wettest. For sun, warm water and fewer people, September–November and March (outside Carnival) are good compromises.

Does it rain a lot in winter (June–August)?

June is the wettest month in Valença's averages (about 169–170 mm), but rain usually comes in showers rather than all day. Just leave slack in your boat-trip plans.

Does the sea get cold?

Not really. The average in neighbouring Morro de São Paulo ranges from about 25.5 °C (August) to 28.7 °C (March), according to TemperaturaDoMar.pt.

Which tide table should I use for Boipeba?

The Brazilian Navy (CHM/DHN) has no station on Boipeba. The nearest official stations are Porto de Salvador and Porto de Ilhéus (Malhado). Use them to pick good-tide days and confirm the exact time with a local boatman.

What tide height is good for the Moreré pools?

Travel sources suggest a low tide around 0.0–0.2 m. The lower the better; full- and new-moon (spring) tides usually bring the lowest lows.

Is New Year's or Carnival a good time to go?

They're the busiest dates of the year: accommodation and transport are in high demand, so book well ahead. Avoid them if you want peace and quiet.
